Rwanda expects below-average rain as strong winds forecast in western districts

Rwanda is set for below-average rainfall in the final 11 days of August, with strong winds expected in several western districts, Meteo Rwanda said.

Rainfall from Aug. 21 to 31 is forecast at between 0 and 30 millimeters, compared with a normal range of 4 to 45 millimeters for the period, the national weather agency said.

The highest amounts, between 20 and 30 millimeters, are expected in northern parts of Rubavu, Nyabihu and Musanze districts.

Burera, northern parts of Gicumbi, Rulindo and Muhanga, and much of Gakenke, Nyamagabe and Nyaruguru are forecast to receive 10 to 20 millimeters. Other parts of the Western province and Musanze are expected to receive similar amounts.

Most other areas are forecast to receive 5 to 10 millimeters, while much of Kayonza and Kirehe and eastern parts of Ngoma and Gatsibo could receive less than 5 millimeters.

Meteo Rwanda said temperatures are expected to be slightly above the usual levels for the period. Daytime temperatures will range from 22 to 33 degrees Celsius, while nighttime temperatures are forecast at 10 to 18 degrees.

The highest daytime temperatures, between 30 and 33 degrees, are expected in eastern Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Kayonza and Bugesera, western Ngoma and the Bugarama Valley.

The coolest daytime conditions, between 22 and 24 degrees, are forecast in much of Musanze, Nyabihu, Ngororero, Nyamagabe and Nyaruguru, as well as parts of Burera, Karongi, Rusizi, Nyamasheke, Rutsiro and Rubavu.

Winds will range from moderate to strong, with speeds of 4 to 12 meters per second across different parts of the country.

The strongest winds, at 8 to 12 meters per second, are forecast in parts of Rutsiro, Rubavu, Karongi, Nyamasheke, Ngororero, Nyabihu and Nyamagabe.

Meteo Rwanda urged residents, particularly in Nyamasheke, Karongi, Rutsiro and Rubavu, to take precautions against possible impacts from the strong winds.

The forecast period falls within Rwanda’s Impeshyi, or dry season.
