Health Ministry warns of methanol-tainted alcohol after 44 deaths

Ministry of Health has warned the public against consuming methanol-tainted and substandard alcoholic beverages after more than 44 people died and hundreds of others fell ill in recent months.

The ministry said at least 28 of the deaths occurred within a 10-day period, while more than 229 people who consumed the alcohol became seriously ill and were admitted to health facilities for treatment.

Health officials said some survivors have suffered lasting complications, including impaired vision and blindness.

The ministry said the cases have been reported in the districts of Bugesera, Ruhango, Nyamagabe and Rwamagana, where authorities have identified illicit alcoholic drinks commonly known as ibyuma and other beverages adulterated with methanol and other harmful chemicals.

Health Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana urged Rwandans to avoid consuming alcohol that does not meet safety standards, warning that drinks causing unusually rapid intoxication may be harmful to the brain and other internal organs.

“Nothing is more valuable than your life,” Nsanzimana said. He urged the public to avoid alcohol of questionable quality and to remain vigilant when purchasing or consuming alcoholic beverages.

The minister said agencies responsible for quality control, inspections and law enforcement are working to identify and shut down illegal alcohol producers, but stressed that public cooperation remains critical to the effort.

He also called on residents to avoid beverages and food prepared under unhygienic conditions and to report suspected illegal production sites to the relevant authorities.

The Ministry of Health said it will continue working with enforcement agencies to remove substandard alcohol from the market and prevent further illnesses and deaths linked to illicit alcoholic beverages.
