Rwanda pitches green investment push at London climate action week

Rwanda sought to position itself as a reliable destination for climate-focused investment during London Climate Action Week, which ran June 20–28, 2026, as global leaders gathered in London to discuss climate finance and sustainable development.

Minister of Environment Bernadette Arakwiye said the country aims to attract investment in environmental protection projects that also support economic and social development. She highlighted Rwanda’s Country Platform for Climate and Development, which is designed to align national development planning with climate action and improve coordination of green investment.

Arakwiye said Rwanda is seeking stronger partnerships with international investors and development institutions to scale up high-impact environmental projects. She said the country’s goal is to combine environmental protection with improved livelihoods while maintaining a stable environment for climate-related investment.

London Climate Action Week is an annual forum that brings together government officials, private sector leaders, researchers, civil society groups and youth to advance global responses to climate change.

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres used the forum to criticize the continued profitability of major fossil fuel companies amid rising global energy costs and worsening climate impacts.

Guterres said the world’s eight largest oil and gas companies recorded more than $6.5 billion in profits in the first quarter of 2026. He called on governments to impose taxes on what he described as windfall profits and direct the revenue toward vulnerable communities and investment in affordable clean energy.

Guterres also reiterated his call for a global shift away from oil, gas and coal, urging faster action to reduce emissions and address the impacts of climate change.
