Madonna makes music history as ‘Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II’ returns her to No. 1

Four decades into a career defined by reinvention, Madonna has once again reached the top of the music world.

The pop icon’s latest album, Confessions on a Dance Floor: Part II, debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart after its July 3 release, giving the 67-year-old singer her 10th chart-topping album and placing her among a select group of artists to achieve the milestone.

The achievement ties Madonna with The Beatles for the most No. 1 albums by an artist in Billboard 200 history and makes her the first woman to score a No. 1 album across five different decades.

The album’s success marks another major chapter in a career that has repeatedly challenged expectations about age, creativity and pop music. A sequel to her 2005 album Confessions on a Dance Floor, the new record revisits the dance-driven sound that helped define one of Madonna’s most successful eras while introducing new collaborations and a more personal perspective.

“I can’t believe it’s #1 all around the world,” Madonna wrote in a message to fans on Instagram. “My dream was to make people dance this summer!! To bring people JOY!”

The album’s first-week performance was driven largely by traditional sales, with 114,000 pure album purchases contributing to its debut, alongside 19,000 streaming-equivalent units, according to Billboard data.

The strong opening came as a surprise even to Madonna, who said she approached the project without expectations.

“I don’t have any expectations. I have been doing this for a long time. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst,” she said in an interview with BBC’s Graham Norton.

The singer said the original Confessions on a Dance Floor exceeded her expectations when it was released in 2005 and described the new album as a complete artistic journey.

“I’m excited for people to hear the whole album because it’s a whole story,” she said.

Produced largely by Stuart Price, who also worked on the original Confessions on a Dance Floor and the hit single “Hung Up,” the album features collaborations with artists including Martin Garrix, Cirkut, Arca and Tainy. It also includes a guest appearance from Madonna’s daughter Lourdes “Lola” Leon on the track “The Test.”

Madonna co-wrote and co-produced every song on the album, with critics praising the project as one of her most personal releases in years.

With her latest chart milestone, Madonna has added another record to a career built on breaking them — proving that her ability to connect with audiences remains as strong as ever.
