Prime Minister Nsengiyumva hands over 30 homes, links security to development

Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva on Saturday handed over 30 newly built homes to vulnerable families in Nyabihu District, saying Rwanda’s security is inseparable from the country’s social and economic development.

The houses were built through a joint initiative by the Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) and the Rwanda National Police (RNP) as part of activities marking the 32nd anniversary of Liberation Day.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, Nsengiyumva said Rwanda’s concept of security extends beyond the absence of armed conflict to protecting citizens, their families and their property while improving their quality of life.

“Security is not only about the absence of war,” he said. “It also means ensuring that nothing threatens the peace of Rwandans, their families or their property while promoting their well-being.”

He said the housing project demonstrates the role security institutions continue to play in supporting national development, describing cooperation between the RDF, the RNP and local communities as a key pillar of Rwanda’s stability.

Nsengiyumva also praised members of the security services for their commitment to community development, saying their work reflects the values that have shaped the country since its liberation. He urged the beneficiary families to maintain the houses and use them to improve their livelihoods.

Each of the 30 homes is valued at about Rwf15 million.

The handover was attended by Minister of Gender and Family Promotion Consolee Uwimana, Inspector General of Police CG Felix Namuhoranye and Maj. Gen. Eugene Nkubito, commander of the RDF’s 3rd Division in Western Province, among other officials.

According to government officials, the housing project is one of several community initiatives carried out by the RDF and the RNP over the past three months to mark the 32nd anniversary of Liberation Day. The projects, implemented across the country, are valued at more than Rwf2.7 billion and include housing, infrastructure and other activities aimed at improving the welfare of vulnerable communities.
