Kagame condoles Tanzania’s Samia after husband’s death

President Paul Kagame has sent condolences to Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan following the death of her husband, Hafidh Ameir Hassan.

In a message posted on X, Kagame said Rwanda stood with President Samia and the people of Tanzania during the period of mourning, honouring Ameir’s life and legacy.

Ameir died at 8 a.m. local time (0600 GMT) on Monday while receiving treatment at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi said in an official announcement.

Ndejembi said Ameir had been suffering from a heart condition and that funeral arrangements were under way in Kizimkazi, a village in Zanzibar.

An agricultural academic who largely kept a low public profile, Ameir became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman when Samia took office as president in 2021.

Ndejembi conveyed condolences to President Samia, Ameir’s family and friends following his death.

Samia became Tanzania’s first female president in March 2021 following the death of President John Magufuli.
