Rwanda advanced to the semifinals of the African Women’s Volleyball Championship on Tuesday after defeating Ghana 3-1 in the quarterfinals at Kasarani Indoor Arena in Nairobi, Kenya.
The victory sends Rwanda into the last four for the second consecutive edition of the continental championship, after the team reached the semifinals in 2023 in Cameroon.
Rwanda made a strong start, winning the opening set 25-17 and putting Ghana under pressure from the beginning.
The Rwandans maintained their momentum in the second set, building a six-point advantage at 18-12 as they looked set to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Ghana responded strongly late in the set, cutting Rwanda’s lead before taking advantage of errors and a lack of coordination from the Rwandan side to win 26-24 and level the match at 1-1.
Rwanda regrouped in the third set and regained control, winning 25-19 to move within one set of the semifinals.
The Rwandans then closed out the match in the fourth set, winning 25-18 to secure a 3-1 victory.
Rwanda will face the winner of the quarterfinal between Egypt and Tunisia in the semifinals.
The continental championship is being held in Nairobi, bringing together some of Africa’s leading women’s volleyball teams.
