President Paul Kagame met a bipartisan delegation of U.S. lawmakers on Thursday to discuss Rwanda’s development agenda and ways to deepen cooperation between the two countries in sectors including health, energy and investment.
The delegation, led by Congressman Brett Guthrie, chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce, was received at Village Urugwiro, the Office of the President, according to a statement issued by the Presidency.
The talks focused on Rwanda’s development progress and opportunities to strengthen bilateral cooperation in areas of shared interest, the Presidency said. Discussions covered health, energy and investment, alongside broader efforts to expand economic collaboration between Kigali and Washington.
Joining Guthrie were fellow members of Congress Troy Carter, Morgan Griffith, Russ Fulcher, Jay Obernolte, Cliff Bentz, Craig Goldman and Julie Fedorchak.
The visit comes as Rwanda and the United States continue to build on a long-standing partnership spanning public health, trade, investment, education, energy and technology. The two countries also cooperate on development initiatives supported by the United States, including programmes previously implemented through the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), alongside other bilateral projects.
The Presidency did not disclose whether any new agreements were signed during the meeting but said the discussions were aimed at identifying additional opportunities to expand cooperation in areas that support economic growth and development in both countries.
