RIB sends Yugi Umukaraza rape case to prosecutors

The Rwanda Investigation Bureau (RIB) has forwarded a rape case involving musician Iradukunda Aimable, known as Yugi Umukaraza, to the Prosecutor’s Office, following allegations made by media personality Mbabazi Shadia, popularly known as Shaddyboo.

RIB spokesperson Dr. Murangira B. Thierry confirmed the development on Monday, June 29, 2026. He said investigators are handling two suspected offenses in the case: rape and drug use.

He added that the file has now been transferred to prosecutors for further legal action.

RIB has also continued to caution the public against criminal behavior linked to alcohol and drug abuse, saying such factors often contribute to serious offenses.

Under Rwanda’s penal code, rape carries a penalty of 10 to 15 years in prison and a fine ranging from 1 million to 2 million Rwandan francs upon conviction.

Shaddyboo first made the allegation public on Instagram on June 22, 2026, saying the incident occurred the previous night, June 21.

She claimed that Yugi visited her home and that they consumed alcohol together before the alleged assault took place. She also stated that she was menstruating at the time of the incident.

Shaddyboo said she later tried to reach him to discuss what had happened, but communication was cut off.

She said she chose to go public to encourage other survivors of sexual violence to speak out rather than remain silent.

RIB confirmed it received her complaint the same day it was filed and said she was taken to the Isange One Stop Center for medical and investigative support.

Authorities also urged restraint in public commentary, warning against drawing conclusions while investigations and legal processes are ongoing.

Yugi Umukaruka, whose real name is Iradukunda Aimable, is a musician and instructor at the Rwanda School of Creative Arts and Music (RSCAM) in Muhanga District, formerly Nyundo Music School.

He graduated in 2018 alongside artists including Kenny Sol and later joined the institution as a teacher, focusing on drums and music training.

He has released songs including “Higher,” “Location,” and “Cheers,” a collaboration with rapper Ish Kevin that helped increase his visibility in Rwanda’s music industry.

Yugi is known for Afro-fusion music that blends contemporary styles with traditional Rwandan influences.
