Kagame calls for follow-up after siblings say they lost their parents’ home

President Paul Kagame has called for follow-up through the justice system after 10 siblings told him they had been left without a home despite winning a court case over their parents’ house.

The matter was raised by Byiringiro Elysee, the tenth of 11 children, during a dialogue between Kagame and young people at BK Arena on Wednesday, October 21.

Byiringiro told the President that people had taken the family’s house, leaving the siblings homeless even though they had won a case in court.

The account raised a difficult question for the family: how to secure the benefit of a court victory when, according to their representative, they still could not recover their home.

Kagame responded by saying the case should be followed up quickly through the justice system. He also asked officials to consider whether the siblings needed additional assistance.

His response addressed both the legal dispute and the family’s immediate circumstances, recognising that the case required follow-up rather than being left unresolved.

For the siblings, the house is not simply a property dispute. Their representative told the President that losing access to their parents’ home had left them without shelter, adding a personal dimension to their appeal.

The exchange also highlighted the importance of ensuring that people can pursue their rights through the appropriate institutions and obtain practical results when disputes have been decided in court.

Kagame’s call for follow-up put the case before the relevant officials for further attention. His request that they consider other forms of assistance also acknowledged that resolving the legal issue might not, by itself, address every difficulty the family was facing.

The case was raised during a public discussion in which young people had the opportunity to bring personal and community concerns directly to the President.

Kagame asked for the matter to be followed up through the justice system and for the family’s wider needs to be considered.
