Ambassadors of Christ Choir will mark 30 years of gospel ministry with a major concert at BK Arena on Sunday, reflecting on a journey that began shortly after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
The choir started its ministry in 1995, at a time when Rwanda was struggling to recover from the genocide, with many people dealing with trauma, grief and loss of hope.
Muvunyi Reuben, chairman of Ambassadors of Christ Choir, said the group turned to music as a way of reaching people who had become afraid of churches or stopped worshipping.
“There were still many wounds. The country had lost hope, people were deeply hurt, and churches had been abandoned because of what had happened there,” Muvunyi said.
“So we chose to sing as a way of reaching people who no longer worshipped, who were afraid to go to churches and had lost hope, so that they could regain hope.”
The choir has also faced difficult moments during its three-decade journey, including two accidents that claimed the lives of some of its members.
Muvunyi said the anniversary is an opportunity to look back at the choir’s journey and the changes Rwanda has undergone.
“Thirty years is not something easy. We have seen God’s hand, witnessed His miracles and seen people saved from sin. We have also seen the country emerge from darkness and become a country full of hope,” he said.
Ugandan composer Ssozi Joram, who has written songs for the choir since 1997, said the anniversary theme, “The Lord is the one who wrote our history,” reflects his belief that God has guided the choir’s musical journey.
The concert will be held at BK Arena on August 30. People abroad will also be able to follow it online.
