Rwanda Military Academy in Gako has launched the Defence College of Health Sciences, with Defence Minister Juvenal Marizamunda officiating the opening of the institution’s inaugural cohort on Friday.
The new college is aimed at strengthening specialised military medical education and developing health professionals able to combine clinical expertise with the demands of military service.
Speaking at the launch, Marizamunda said the institution would integrate military knowledge with advanced medical practice and prepare military health professionals to work effectively in different operational environments.

He said the college would contribute to the government’s efforts to strengthen medical education and improve healthcare for members of the Rwanda Defence Force.
The minister also highlighted the importance of developing medical personnel who can respond to the changing needs of the armed forces, including in demanding operational environments.
Addressing the first group of students, Marizamunda described them as pioneers of the new institution and urged them to embrace both the opportunities and challenges ahead.
The college is based at the Rwanda Military Academy in Gako and is intended to provide advanced training in military medicine while supporting research, innovation and leadership development in the field.

According to the Ministry of Defence, the institution is expected to help develop specialised capabilities that contribute both to the wellbeing of service members and the operational readiness of the Rwanda Defence Force.
The launch marks a new stage in Rwanda’s military medical education, bringing specialised health training into an institution dedicated to developing professionals who can serve in both routine and challenging military environments.
