President Paul Kagame on Saturday held talks with Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, focusing on strengthening relations between Rwanda and Uganda and advancing regional peace and security.
Gen. Muhoozi, who also serves as Senior Presidential Adviser to Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on Special Military Operations, arrived in Kigali for a two-day working visit. He was received at Kigali International Airport by Rwanda Defence Force Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Mubarakh Muganga.
According to the Office of the President, the discussions centered on the strong partnership between Rwanda and Uganda, with both sides reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation in security, peace and regional stability.
“Their discussions focused on the strong relationship between Rwanda and Uganda, as well as peace and security in the region,” Village Urugwiro said in a statement posted on its official X account.
During his stay, Gen. Muhoozi is expected to meet senior Rwanda Defence Force commanders to discuss ways of further strengthening military cooperation between the armed forces of the two neighboring countries.
The visit comes as Kigali and Kampala continue to build on improving bilateral relations after years of strained diplomatic ties. Since the reopening of the common border in 2022, both governments have intensified efforts to enhance cooperation in security, trade and regional integration.
Gen. Muhoozi last visited Rwanda in March 2025, when he met senior RDF officials and toured the Nyakinama Senior Command and Staff College in Musanze District. During that visit, he delivered lectures on African cooperation in promoting peace and security across the continent.
His latest visit underscores continued high-level military engagement between Rwanda and Uganda as both countries seek to strengthen strategic cooperation and promote lasting peace and stability in the Great Lakes region.
