FROM UNCERTAINTY TO SUCCESS: MOHAMMAD RAZAK BUILDS A TASTE OF PAKISTAN IN KIGALI’S CULINARY SCENE

Mohammad Razak’s story is a remarkable tale of courage, passion, and new beginnings.

Originally from Pakistan, Razak was a professional chef with years of experience working in some of Pakistan’s top hotels like Serena, Marriott, Pong Continental, and Holiday Inn.

His culinary journey was thriving, but he also dreamed of exploring new horizons.

One day, a fellow Pakistani businessman already settled in Rwanda approached him with an intriguing proposition.

He encouraged Razak to come to Rwanda and offered him a job in the hospitality sector.

When Razak arrived in Rwanda, he was greeted by a different reality one of peace, safety, and warm hospitality.

The country’s serene environment and friendly people immediately made a positive impression on him. With that newfound confidence, he started working as a chef in a local hotel.

His skills and dedication soon became evident, and after some years, he decided to take a bold step: opening his own restaurant.

In 2018, Rahori Restaurant was born. Razak’s vision was simple bring authentic Pakistani cuisine to Rwanda and share his culture through food.

The restaurant quickly gained popularity, not only because of its delicious dishes but also because of the warm, welcoming atmosphere Razak created.

Today, Rahori Restaurant employs over 14 Rwandans some full-time, others part-time and has become a hub for cultural exchange.

Razak’s passion extends beyond just running a restaurant. He’s deeply committed to training Rwandans in Pakistani culinary arts.

Every month, he and his team host free training sessions, averaging around 20 participants, eager to learn the secrets of Pakistani spices, rice, and cooking techniques.

Many Rwandans now appreciate Pakistani cuisine, which Razak proudly notes is quite different from Indian food distinct spices, flavors, and quality ingredients that he brings from Pakistan.

His efforts have helped change perceptions. Before, many thought Pakistani food was the same as Indian cuisine, but today, people come to Rahori Restaurant specifically asking for Pakistani dishes. Razak is proud to see his cuisine appreciated and enjoyed by the Rwandan community.

Razak attributes much of his success to Rwanda’s supportive government and friendly business environment. “Rwanda is my second home,” he says with a smile. “Here, I’ve built strong friendships and a sense of belonging. I plan to spend the rest of my life here retiring in Rwanda, not returning to Pakistan.”

He also encourages fellow Pakistanis to see Rwanda as a land of opportunity. “You can invest in many sectors hospitality, agriculture, manufacturing, trade and find a welcoming environment,” he advises. Looking back, Razak feels grateful for the journey.

His story is more than just about food; it’s about building bridges between two nations, sharing cultures, and creating opportunities.

His experience is a shining example of how Rwanda’s openness and support can turn dreams into reality. And so, Mohammad Razak continues to serve delicious Pakistani dishes, teach aspiring chefs, and foster the friendship between Pakistan and Rwanda proving that with passion and determination, new homes can be found in unexpected places.
