Rwanda’s Formula 1 deal draws praise from African Union

The African Union Commission has welcomed Rwanda’s plan to host Formula 1 races, saying the project reflects Africa’s growing ambition to stage major international sporting events.

In a statement issued in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Friday, Oct. 23, 2026, Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf congratulated the Rwandan government on the agreement, highlighting its potential to raise the continent’s profile in global motorsport.

Youssouf said major sporting competitions could help African countries showcase their capabilities, develop local talent and create opportunities for young people. He also called for stronger cooperation between governments, businesses and other partners to expand Africa’s participation in the global sports industry.

The AU Commission said the initiative was consistent with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, a long-term framework for building a united, prosperous and peaceful Africa.

Rwanda signed a 10-year agreement to host Formula 1 races on Oct. 13, 2026. The deal was announced in Kigali at a ceremony attended by President Paul Kagame, Formula 1 Chief Executive Stefano Domenicali and Mohammed Ben Sulayem, president of the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA).

The first race is expected to take place in the early 2030s at a planned circuit in Bugesera District, about 40 kilometers from Kigali and near the planned Kigali International Airport.

The circuit is expected to meet FIA Grade 1 standards, the highest track classification required to host Formula 1 events.

Youssouf urged AU member states and their partners to work together to ensure sport plays a greater role in strengthening ties across the continent and increasing Africa’s visibility internationally.
