Rwanda and Cyprus have signed an agreement aimed at expanding air connectivity between the two countries, potentially opening the way for closer links in travel, trade and other areas.
The Air Services Agreement (ASA) was signed in New York on Tuesday by Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier J.P. Nduhungirehe and his Cypriot counterpart Constantinos Kombos.
The agreement establishes a framework for air transport cooperation between Rwanda and Cyprus and is intended to facilitate and improve air services between the two countries.
The signing took place alongside discussions between the two foreign ministers on strengthening bilateral cooperation, as well as regional and international issues.
The agreement adds to growing diplomatic engagement between Rwanda and Cyprus and provides a framework for closer cooperation in the aviation sector.
Neither government immediately provided details on when direct flights could begin or which airlines and routes could operate under the agreement.
Cyprus, an EU member state in the eastern Mediterranean, has its capital in Nicosia and a population of more than 1.3 million.
The agreement comes as Rwanda seeks to expand its international air connectivity and strengthen links with markets beyond Africa.
Rwanda’s national carrier, RwandAir, already operates an expanding network connecting Kigali with destinations across Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The new agreement could provide a legal framework for future air links between Rwanda and Cyprus, although any new route would depend on commercial and operational decisions by airlines.
