eKash processes Rwf960 billion in transactions three weeks after launch

Rwanda’s interoperable digital payment platform, eKash, processed more than Rwf960 billion in transactions within three weeks of its nationwide launch, while the number of customers using the service increased by 166%, the National Bank of Rwanda (BNR) said Wednesday.

The figures, released in BNR’s first update on the platform since its launch on July 14, 2026, show that more than 10.5 million transactions have been completed through eKash, with 98.6% recorded as successful.

BNR said the number of eKash customers increased from 740,787 in June 2026 to 1,971,522 by the end of July 2026, representing a 166% rise.

eKash is a shared digital payment platform that enables customers to transfer money between accounts held at different banks and financial institutions. It also allows transfers between bank accounts and mobile money wallets, as well as from mobile money wallets to bank accounts.

BNR said the early adoption of the platform reflects the response from Rwandans and residents who have used the service while providing feedback to support improvements.

The central bank said that although most transactions have been completed successfully, some customers experienced challenges during the initial rollout. The affected financial institutions are working to resolve the issues, with BNR monitoring the process.

BNR has also started a nationwide awareness campaign to help customers understand how eKash works and the services available through the platform.

Customers who continue to experience challenges using eKash have been advised to first contact their respective financial institutions. If the issues are not resolved, they can report them to BNR through the Intumwa Chatbot, by sending an SMS to 6005, via WhatsApp on +250 791 700 721, through the BNR website, or the central bank’s official social media platforms.

BNR said it will continue working with financial institutions and other partners to strengthen eKash and ensure the service remains secure, reliable and efficient for users.

The central bank said customers can transfer up to Rwf10 million in a single eKash transaction, while charges for each transaction should not exceed Rwf20.
