Rwanda and Tanzania are seeking to strengthen economic and strategic cooperation as senior officials from both countries continue a series of high-level engagements aimed at expanding their partnership.
The latest push came on Sunday when Rwanda’s Foreign Minister Olivier Nduhungirehe held talks in Dar es Salaam with Tanzania’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Mahmoud Thabit Kombo.
The discussions focused on strengthening bilateral relations, according to Rwanda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as the two East African neighbors work to advance cooperation in areas including trade, transport, investment and regional integration.
The meeting is part of sustained diplomatic engagement between Kigali and Dodoma, whose relationship has grown around shared economic interests and membership in the East African Community.
Tanzania remains a key transit route for Rwanda, a landlocked country that relies heavily on regional transport networks to connect with international markets. Cooperation in infrastructure and trade facilitation has therefore remained central to relations between the two countries.
The foreign ministers’ talks followed recent engagements at the highest level. In May, President Paul Kagame visited Tanzania and held discussions with President Samia Suluhu Hassan on strengthening cooperation and expanding areas of mutual benefit.
During that visit, Kagame highlighted Tanzania’s importance as a strategic partner, pointing to the role of trade and transport links in supporting Rwanda’s economic development.
President Samia later traveled to Kigali, continuing the recent exchange of high-level visits between the two countries.
Nduhungirehe was accompanied during the Dar es Salaam talks by Gisa Teta, Rwanda’s official responsible for Africa affairs at the foreign ministry, and Rwanda’s ambassador to Tanzania, Gen. Patrick Nyamvumba.
The latest engagement comes as East African countries continue efforts to deepen regional integration through increased trade, investment and cooperation among member states.
