This has taught us that we must not become complacent or neglect our responsibility to protect Rwanda’s security,” Nsengiyumva said.

He said the country continued to face a serious threat from the FDLR, a group whose members include individuals implicated in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. He also alleged that the group continued to receive support from the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Nsengiyumva said addressing the FDLR issue, as provided for under the Washington Accords, was important to restoring peace and security in the region.

He also raised concern over hate speech and persecution targeting Congolese Tutsi and other Kinyarwanda-speaking communities in eastern DRC, saying efforts to counter such practices were necessary to protect civilians.

The Prime Minister added that resolving the political causes of the conflict was equally important to achieving lasting peace.

Rwanda has said it remains committed to implementing the Washington Accords and other African Union-led initiatives aimed at resolving security challenges in the region.

Nsengiyumva said resolving the security and political issues underlying the conflict would allow countries in the region to focus more on economic development, cooperation and investment based on their natural resources.

Prime Minister, Dr Justin Nsengiyumva, has described the Democratic Forces for the Liberation of Rwanda (FDLR) as a continuing threat to the country’s security, saying […]

[49,43,53,41,5,35,40

post-5009","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-africa-news","category-current_affairs","category-featured-stories","category-hot_topics","category-politics","category-regional","category-top_stories
["GET
