{"id":4640,"date":"2026-10-16T15:14:57","date_gmt":"2026-10-16T15:14:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/?p=4640"},"modified":"2026-10-16T15:14:57","modified_gmt":"2026-10-16T15:14:57","slug":"rwanda-takes-mibirizi-coffee-to-japan-ahead-of-first-auction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/index.php\/2026\/10\/16\/rwanda-takes-mibirizi-coffee-to-japan-ahead-of-first-auction\/economy\/business\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda takes Mibirizi coffee to Japan ahead of first auction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"996\" height=\"741\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IMG_9614.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4641\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IMG_9614.webp 996w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IMG_9614-300x223.webp 300w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/10\/IMG_9614-767x571.webp 767w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 996px) 100vw, 996px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rwanda is presenting its heritage Mibirizi Arabica coffee to Japanese buyers ahead of an international auction scheduled for October 21, as the country seeks to create new commercial opportunities for its coffee producers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The coffee was showcased on Friday, October 16, at the Specialty Coffee Association of Japan (SCAJ) exhibition in Tokyo, where industry professionals sampled it and assessed its flavour and aroma.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The event was organised by the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB), which has been working to restore the variety and promote it in specialty coffee markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mibirizi was introduced to Rwanda in 1904 but later declined in cultivation as other varieties gained ground. Efforts to revive it have involved research, preservation of planting material, cooperation with farmers and work to improve coffee quality, according to NAEB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The October 21 auction is expected to offer Mibirizi as a distinct variety for international buyers. It will take place alongside the auction of coffees selected through the 2026 Best of Rwanda competition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rwanda\u2019s Ambassador to Japan, Marie Claire Mukasine, said the revival of Mibirizi linked the country\u2019s coffee-growing heritage with opportunities in higher-value markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cReviving Mibirizi coffee is a source of pride for Rwanda. It connects our heritage in coffee farming with new opportunities in high-end coffee markets,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Tokyo programme also included a seminar on October 14 featuring coffees recognised in the 2026 Best of Rwanda competition. Participants tasted selected coffees and discussed sourcing and potential business partnerships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Best of Rwanda was launched in 2024 by NAEB in partnership with the Coffee Exporters and Processors Association in Rwanda (CEPAR).
