These policies are set out in frameworks including Rwanda’s Nationally Determined Contribution, the Green Growth and Climate Resilience Strategy and the National Environment and Climate Change Policy.

Wetland restoration, water conservation and protection of watersheds are among the adaptation measures being pursued to help address drought and flooding.

Rwanda is also promoting renewable energy and more efficient use of energy as part of efforts to reduce emissions. The government is seeking to reduce reliance on industries, vehicles and other equipment that generate high levels of harmful emissions.

Waste has become another part of the environmental strategy. Rather than treating waste only as material for disposal, national policy promotes a circular economy in which discarded materials can be reused or converted into products with economic value.

The cooperation discussions with Algeria could therefore extend beyond environmental protection to areas where climate policy intersects with agriculture, urban development, resource management and economic activity.

The two sides said the shared priorities could provide a basis for continued cooperation and exchange of expertise on climate resilience and sustainable development.

Forest restoration, climate-smart farming and better use of waste are among the areas Rwanda and Algeria are considering for closer environmental cooperation.
