Rwanda\u2019s Technical and Vocational Education and Training authority plans to assess workers who have gained practical skills and experience on the job but lack recognised qualifications, with a view to certifying them, its director general has said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Paul Mukunzi, director general of the Rwanda TVET Board (RTB), said the exercise would target people already on the labour market, including young people who have acquired skills through work but do not hold formal certificates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe have many Rwandans working in private companies who have different skills and are already on the labour market but do not have qualifications,\u201d Mukunzi said. \u201cThrough these agreements, we will assess the skills they have and give them qualifications that correspond to the skills they have acquired in the labour market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mukunzi was speaking after RTB signed cooperation agreements with four private-sector professional associations to strengthen employers\u2019 involvement in TVET training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreements, reached with support from the Swiss Embassy in Rwanda and Never Again Rwanda, are intended to give students more opportunities to gain practical experience while still in school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The four associations are the Rwanda Garage Association, Rwanda Wood Value Chain Association, Rwanda Tailors Association and an association representing the tourism and hospitality sector.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mukunzi said the partnerships would also help ensure that TVET training reflects the skills employers need and make it easier for students to find workplaces for practical training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the agreements, private companies will be involved in following students\u2019 progress from school and will receive students for workplace training in fields related to their studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jean Gilbert Niyitegeka, deputy head of the Rwanda Garage Association, said some students taking technical courses had previously struggled to find suitable places to complete their practical training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the new partnerships would make it easier for students to find businesses where they can gain experience in the skills they are studying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Abdu Karemera, head of the Rwanda Wood Value Chain Association, said formal certification could also help experienced workers start businesses that they had previously been unable to establish because they lacked recognised qualifications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said certification would give skilled workers greater confidence to use their experience to pursue business opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The partnerships are expected to strengthen links between TVET institutions and employers while giving students more exposure to workplaces before entering the labour market.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
