President Paul Kagame met an International Monetary Fund board member representing Rwanda on Tuesday as the country continues to record strong economic growth while facing external pressures that could affect its outlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kagame held talks with Regis O. N\u2019Sonde, an IMF Executive Board member who represents Rwanda and 22 other African countries, at Village Urugwiro on Sept. 22, according to the Office of the President.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The discussions focused on Rwanda\u2019s economic performance and its cooperation with the IMF, the president\u2019s office said, without providing further details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting comes three months after the IMF approved a $250 million, 38-month Extended Credit Facility programme for Rwanda to support economic reforms and help the country manage fiscal and external risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IMF authorised an initial disbursement of about $35.7 million when the programme was approved on June 8. The fund said at the time that risks from the prolonged war in the Middle East could weigh on Rwanda\u2019s growth, inflation, external balance and debt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rwanda\u2019s economy grew 9.4% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2026, according to the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda. GDP at current market prices reached Rwf7,174 billion, compared with Rwf5,799 billion in the same quarter a year earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growth was driven largely by industry, which expanded 18%, while services grew 7% and agriculture increased 4%. Mining and quarrying rose 26%, while construction grew 24%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest quarterly expansion follows 9.4% growth for the full year in 2025, according to NISR.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The IMF programme is intended to support macroeconomic adjustment, manage fiscal and debt risks and promote private-sector-led growth, with implementation subject to periodic reviews.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
