(max-width: 684px) 100vw, 684px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rwanda will host the 38th Meeting of the Parties to the Montreal Protocol in November, bringing countries to Kigali a decade after the adoption of the Kigali Amendment on reducing hydrofluorocarbons used in cooling equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting, known as MOP38, will take place from Nov. 2 to 6, according to the UN Environment Programme\u2019s Ozone Secretariat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Kigali Amendment was adopted in Kigali on Oct. 15, 2016, when countries agreed to gradually reduce the production and consumption of hydrofluorocarbons, or HFCs, which are powerful greenhouse gases commonly used in refrigeration and air conditioning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rwanda&#8217;s Environment Minister, Dr Bernadette Arakwiye, said hosting MOP38 would allow countries to review progress made since the Kigali Amendment was agreed and identify what remains to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-28-1024x683-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3859\" https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/image-28-1024x683-1-768x512.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c MOP38 is an opportunity to look at the progress made, but also at what is still needed to ensure our commitments are implemented sustainably,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The minister said reducing HFC use and improving cooling technologies could contribute to climate protection while supporting food security, healthcare and economic development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ozone Secretariat&#8217;s Executive Secretary, Megumi Seki Nakamura, said returning to Kigali after 10 years would provide an opportunity to assess progress and preserve the gains made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rwanda joined the Montreal Protocol in 2001, according to the Ozone Secretariat, and ratified the Kigali Amendment in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government has described the upcoming meeting as an opportunity to mark a decade since countries adopted the
