When you have it, you can build models for different sectors,” Moussa said.

He said such models could then be adapted for areas including health and education before being turned into applications serving citizens, businesses and government institutions.

Moussa cited examples from China, where AI is being used in schools to provide information that can help teachers improve learning. In health care, he said, AI can analyse medical images and assist doctors in diagnosing diseases.

He also cited the use of technology in Shenzhen to monitor traffic and infrastructure, and said similar applications could be explored in Rwanda’s agriculture sector and among small and medium-sized businesses.

“Think about how it could work here in Rwanda. Whether it is agriculture or the output of small and medium-sized enterprises, you can use AI to automate some activities,” he said.

Callixte Kanamugire, director general of the Rwanda Private Sector Federation, said the expansion of AI must be accompanied by efforts to equip young people with skills needed to adapt to changes in the labour market.

The comments came on Sept. 17 during the launch of the first report on corporate social responsibility activities by Chinese companies operating in Rwanda and the first cohort of AI trainees under the Luban Workshop.

Chinese Ambassador to Rwanda Gao Wenqi said Chinese companies operating in Rwanda should work with Rwandans, comply with local laws and promote responsible practices in their dealings with communities and the environment.

The discussions took place as Rwanda and China mark 55 years of diplomatic relations.
