Rwanda\u2019s youth have been urged to build skills, create jobs and pursue productive activities as the country prepares for a much larger population in the coming decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The call was made during national celebrations of World Population Day in Nyagatare District, where officials said the choices made by young people today will shape the quality of life of future generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ishungure Parfait, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Youth and Arts Development, said young people make up the generation that will lead the country in the years ahead and should therefore focus on activities that contribute to their own livelihoods and wider development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThose who will live in the future are the young people of today. To have confidence that people, particularly in our country, will have a good quality of life, we need young people who work, create jobs and prepare for the future we want,\u201d Ishungure said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He encouraged young people to make use of opportunities available to them while avoiding alcohol, drugs and other activities he described as unproductive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ishungure also commended young people who have started businesses and other initiatives that provide employment for their peers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mutuyimana Dismas, who runs a commercial pig farming business, said government support and guidance had helped him put his ideas into practice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI am happy that I have something I am doing on this world that contributes to its development, starting with myself and my country,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mumararungu Dorianne, a professional photographer, said she chose to turn her skills into a livelihood and contribute to her community through the services she provides.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI chose to practise photography because I enjoy it and wanted to make productive use of my skills,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

United Nations population projections put the world\u2019s population at more than 8.3 billion in 2026, with the figure expected to reach 9.5 billion by 2050.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rwanda\u2019s population, currently estimated at more than 14.4 million, is projected to reach about 22 million by 2050, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials said preparing for that growth will require a productive population capable of meeting rising demand for food, services and other needs.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
