Rwanda\u2019s junior police officers have been challenged to uphold the values of the country\u2019s heroes and put them into practice as they carry out their duties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The call was made on Saturday when 304 officers attending the Non-Commissioned Officer (NCO) Course at the Police Training School in Gishari, Rwamagana District, visited the Heroes\u2019 Mausoleum in Remera, Kigali.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The officers and their instructors were first briefed on Rwanda\u2019s history, cultural values and taboos before touring the site, where they learned about the lives and contribution of national heroes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sgt. Nuwamanya Innocent said the visit had reminded them of the importance of serving the country and preserving the legacy left by those who sacrificed for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVisiting the Heroes\u2019 Mausoleum reminds us and makes us reflect again on what it takes to sacrifice for our country, so that even those who will be born after we are gone can learn from us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He urged young people to learn the country\u2019s history and avoid drug abuse and other activities that could undermine their future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sgt. Inyumba Monica, who was visiting the site for the first time, said the experience had taught her the importance of commitment to duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is about continuing to work hard like those who came before us, so that we can follow in their footsteps and understand what made them heroes,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rwaka Nicolas, head of the Research Department at the Chancellery for Heroes, National Orders and Decorations of Honour (CHENO), said visits by junior officers help promote the culture of heroism among a wider section of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said young people can also help address drug abuse and other social challenges by embracing Rwandan cultural values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rwanda has three sites linked to the country\u2019s heritage of heroism: the Heroes\u2019 Mausoleum in Kigali, the Humanity Centre in Rubavu and the Rwandan Identity Centre in Nyange, Ngororero.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kigali site is being expanded to include sections on heroes in the Imanzi, Imena and Ingenzi categories, as well as audiovisual archives and other materials to help visitors learn about their history and legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
