{"id":3228,"date":"2026-08-26T17:42:50","date_gmt":"2026-08-26T17:42:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/?p=3228"},"modified":"2026-08-26T21:01:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-26T21:01:30","slug":"rwanda-secures-e82-million-15-billion-yen-in-commercial-loan-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/26\/rwanda-secures-e82-million-15-billion-yen-in-commercial-loan-deal\/economy\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda secures \u20ac82 Million, 15 billion yen in commercial loan deal"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"738\" height=\"414\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/jjjjjj.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3229\" style=\"width:804px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/jjjjjj.jpg 738w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/jjjjjj-300x168.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 738px) 100vw, 738px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rwanda has secured a new commercial loan facility combining \u20ac82 million (about Rwf140.8 billion) and 15 billion Japanese yen (about Rwf138.9 billion), bringing the total value of the financing to more than Rwf280 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 15-year facility includes a six-year grace period before Rwanda begins repaying the principal, according to the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning (MINECOFIN).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The transaction, which closed on Aug. 25, is part of the government&#8217;s efforts to diversify its sources of financing and gain access to new international capital markets, particularly in Japan and other parts of Asia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Finance Minister Yusuf Murangwa said the yen component represents a new financing opportunity that Rwanda intends to develop further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe yen component opens a new financing market for Rwanda, which we intend to continue expanding in the future,\u201d Murangwa said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The financing is backed by guarantees from the World Bank Group and forms part of Rwanda&#8217;s strategy to access international capital on competitive terms while managing its debt obligations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MINECOFIN said the approach is intended to help lower borrowing costs, improve the timing of debt repayments and provide access to stable sources of financing over the long term.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis funding exercise reflects Rwanda&#8217;s broader debt management strategy, which leverages multilateral guarantees to access international capital on competitive terms,\u201d the ministry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The six-year grace period is expected to help the government manage its repayment obligations by spreading debt-service pressures over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The proceeds will be channelled through the national budget to support government programmes, including infrastructure, health and nutrition, education, agriculture, social protection and industrial development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The yen-denominated financing marks a new addition to Rwanda&#8217;s external borrowing sources.
