As Rwanda marks 32 years since liberation, the country\u2019s development journey reflects a shift from post-conflict reconstruction toward long-term resilience, driven by both public institutions and a growing private sector increasingly embedded in essential service delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the companies reflecting this transformation are Kipharma, Unipharma, and Agrotech, with activities spanning pharmaceutical distribution, pharmacy services, and agro-veterinary supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview for the Liberation special pullout, Chief Executive Officer Giovanni Davite said the companies were founded on a vision of national self-reliance and improved access to essential goods and services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe foundational inspiration was a commitment to national self-reliance and the well-being of Rwandans,\u201d he said. \u201cWe identified gaps in supply chains for essential medicines and agricultural inputs and set out to build a bridge between global innovation and the local market.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Over time, this vision evolved into a structured model serving both health and agriculture through specialized companies, each with distinct but complementary roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davite said this structure allows each entity to build technical expertise while maintaining shared values that support efficiency and sustainable growth. The operations align with Rwanda\u2019s Vision 2050 and the National Strategy for Transformation (NST), particularly in health system strengthening, agricultural productivity, and job creation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Strengthening health and agriculture systems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through Kipharma and Unipharma, the companies contribute to improving access to essential medicines and strengthening pharmaceutical distribution systems. Agrotech supports agricultural transformation through improved seeds, fertilizers, and veterinary inputs aimed at boosting productivity and food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davite said persistent challenges remain, particularly in last-mile delivery, cold chain logistics, and global supply chain disruptions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGlobal supply volatility and reaching remote areas remain ongoing challenges,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also pointed to gaps in access to specialized medical products and advanced agricultural technologies outside urban areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite these constraints, he noted that the private sector plays a key role in improving efficiency, innovation, and distribution systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kipharma and Unipharma have helped improve pharmaceutical standards through better storage systems, regulatory compliance, and reduced stock-outs. Agrotech has supported agricultural modernization by introducing improved agronomic and veterinary practices at farm level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agriculture in transition<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Agriculture in Rwanda has steadily moved from subsistence to more commercial systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Farmers are increasingly adopting improved seeds, fertilizers, and modern techniques, while livestock keepers are embracing preventive veterinary care, improved feeds, and breeding systems such as artificial insemination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davite said these changes have improved yields, strengthened food security, and increased rural household incomes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Impact on daily life<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond systems, the companies say their impact is visible in everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For patients, it means reliable access to safe medicines. For farmers, improved productivity and stable harvests. For livestock keepers, healthier animals and more secure income streams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also noted that increased competition in the sector has improved service quality and efficiency across the board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Looking ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strategy focuses on regional expansion, digital transformation of supply chains, and greater local value addition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davite highlighted opportunities under the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), which could position Rwanda as a regional hub for health and agricultural distribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Future priorities include digital supply systems, precision agriculture tools, and investment in local manufacturing to reduce import dependence and create skilled jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Liberation message<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As Rwanda commemorates 32 years of liberation, Davite paid tribute to those whose sacrifice restored peace and dignity to the nation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe owe gratitude to the liberators whose sacrifice restored peace, unity, and dignity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that liberation remains an ongoing responsibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a continuous journey that requires us to protect what has been achieved and build an inclusive and prosperous future.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Continuing national story<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

More than three decades after liberation, the trajectory of these companies reflects a broader national shift in which private sector actors are increasingly central to linking health, agriculture, and economic development in Rwanda\u2019s transformation.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
