{"id":3089,"date":"2026-08-19T16:05:26","date_gmt":"2026-08-19T16:05:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/?p=3089"},"modified":"2026-08-19T16:05:26","modified_gmt":"2026-08-19T16:05:26","slug":"government-seeks-machinery-to-expand-conservation-agriculture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/19\/government-seeks-machinery-to-expand-conservation-agriculture\/politics\/national\/","title":{"rendered":"Government seeks machinery to expand conservation agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"660\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vk-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3092\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vk-2.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vk-2-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vk-2-768x507.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government is seeking more farm machinery to expand conservation agriculture to 100,000 hectares during the 2027A farming season, with the Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development Board working with partners to secure the equipment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RAB Acting Director General Dr. Florence Uwamahoro said Tuesday that the agency is looking for machinery that can support farmers practicing conservation agriculture on large plots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are working with different partners to obtain machinery used in conservation agriculture,\u201d Uwamahoro said. \u201cSome places, such as RICA and others, already have them, but we want all service providers offering mechanized farming services to have machinery that can be used on large areas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was speaking at an expanded meeting on preparations for the 2027A farming season and measures to improve food security in the Eastern Province.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"678\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/images-5-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3090\" style=\"width:778px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/images-5-2.jpg 678w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/images-5-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 678px) 100vw, 678px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 765,000 hectares are expected to be cultivated across the country during the season, including 100,000 hectares under conservation agriculture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The practice involves digging planting holes, applying manure or fertilizer and planting crops such as maize and beans without plowing the entire field. Farmers then cover the soil with mulch, helping retain rainwater and moisture in the soil.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">RAB says the shortage of suitable machinery has been a challenge in extending the practice to farmers cultivating larger areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government will also promote farming in designated high-productivity areas under the FOBASI program, where officials expect production to double from previous levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 246,000 hectares are expected to be cultivated under FOBASI, with 100,000 hectares receiving particular attention.
