{"id":3003,"date":"2026-08-17T08:36:32","date_gmt":"2026-08-17T08:36:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/?p=3003"},"modified":"2026-08-17T08:36:32","modified_gmt":"2026-08-17T08:36:32","slug":"faith-leaders-urged-to-help-curb-alcohol-abuse-among-rwandas-youth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/index.php\/2026\/08\/17\/faith-leaders-urged-to-help-curb-alcohol-abuse-among-rwandas-youth\/politics\/national\/","title":{"rendered":"Faith leaders urged to help curb alcohol abuse among Rwanda\u2019s youth"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"731\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/HP3TBrLXoAA4HDi-1-1024x731.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3004\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/HP3TBrLXoAA4HDi-1-1024x731.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/HP3TBrLXoAA4HDi-1-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/HP3TBrLXoAA4HDi-1-768x548.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/HP3TBrLXoAA4HDi-1.jpg 1242w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Religious leaders have been urged to step up efforts to address alcohol abuse among young people and support government programs aimed at improving family welfare and national development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prime Minister Justin Nsengiyumva made the appeal Sunday during the annual \u201cRwanda Shima Imana\u201d thanksgiving gathering at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali, attended by more than 40,000 Rwandans and friends of Rwanda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nsengiyumva called on churches and other religious organizations to help combat illicit and substandard alcoholic drinks, commonly known as \u201cibyuma,\u201d which he said are harming young people, damaging families and contributing to conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHelp us fight \u2018ibyuma\u2019 because they harm our youth, destroy families, hinder their development and can also cause conflicts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said religious organizations reach large sections of the population and should use that influence to educate communities, particularly young people, about excessive drinking and other practices that can undermine their well-being.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nsengiyumva also urged faith leaders to promote families built on love, respect and understanding, saying strong families are essential to building a strong country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He called on religious organizations to support efforts to reduce child stunting, encourage school attendance and improve living conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prime minister described religious organizations as important partners in promoting peace, social cohesion and values that contribute to national development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"602\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/KKK-1-1024x602.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3005\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/KKK-1-1024x602.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/KKK-1-300x176.jpg 300w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/KKK-1-768x452.jpg 768w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/KKK-1.jpg 1253w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The gathering also highlighted Rwanda\u2019s progress since the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rev. Pastor Isaie Ndayizeye, leader of ADEPR in Rwanda and head of Rwanda Shima Imana, said the country had made significant progress from its history of division, poverty and violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ndayizeye said access to clean water had risen from about 30% in 1994 to more than 85% today.
