UEFA has stepped up its opposition to FIFA\u2019s proposed private investment plan for the World Cup, accusing the governing body of putting financial interests ahead of the wider football community after associations were offered a one-off funding package to support the scheme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FIFA sent a letter to national football associations on Wednesday outlining plans to create a new commercial entity, FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), which would oversee the business activities and operational delivery of FIFA tournaments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of the proposal, associations would receive a \u00a330 million funding package if they approve the plan before FIFA\u2019s September 19 deadline. FIFA President Gianni Infantino said the investment would provide long-term financial benefits and help expand opportunities across the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The proposal would allow private investors to acquire an estimated \u00a33 billion stake in World Cup-related commercial activities, with investment bank J.P. Morgan advising FIFA on the project. Thrive Capital, led by Joshua Kushner, is expected to be among the investors involved in discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UEFA, however, has strongly criticised the approach, arguing that FIFA is attempting to use financial incentives to secure support from national associations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFIFA cannot continue to use our sport to enrich themselves and their friends,\u201d UEFA said in a statement. \u201cWe can grow the game correctly. It\u2019s time to prioritise associations, clubs, leagues, players and fans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

UEFA is expected to hold crisis talks with its 55 member associations as it seeks to build opposition to the proposal, according to sources familiar with the discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The European Leagues Association, which includes Premier League clubs among its members, also rejected the plan, saying the World Cup should not be treated as a private investment opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe World Cup should not be for sale,\u201d the organisation said. \u201cIts value is created day in and day out by leagues, clubs, players and supporters who are being left without a voice or a vote on this matter.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Critics have raised concerns about the possible impact of private investment on the future of football, including whether investors could push for more frequent tournaments or changes designed to increase commercial returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

FIFA has argued that the proposed structure would strengthen its ability to invest in football development worldwide, but opposition from European football leaders has intensified pressure on Infantino\u2019s plans.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
