The United Nations has allocated $2 million to help Rwanda strengthen its defenses against Ebola as neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo battles a growing outbreak that has infected more than 3,200 people, U.N. officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The funding comes despite Rwanda having no confirmed Ebola cases, reflecting concerns that the country’s long and busy border with eastern Congo leaves it vulnerable to the spread of the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The grant, provided through the U.N.’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), will support Rwanda’s efforts to improve disease surveillance, border screening and emergency response capacity against the Bundibugyo strain of Ebola currently circulating in Congo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rwanda’s Ministry of Health says no Ebola infections have been detected in the country. Health authorities have, however, stepped up screening at border crossings, hospitals and other high-risk locations to quickly identify any suspected cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking at a U.N. briefing in New York this week, Deputy U.N. Spokesperson Farhan Haq said humanitarian agencies were working alongside the Rwandan government to strengthen preparedness, particularly in districts bordering Congo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said health workers had received additional training in infection prevention, case detection and disease surveillance, while U.N. agencies had delivered protective equipment, laboratory testing supplies and water, sanitation and hygiene materials to communities considered most at risk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community awareness campaigns have also been expanded through local radio broadcasts and public information initiatives, while surveillance has been reinforced at major border entry points, Haq said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The assistance comes as Congo continues to struggle with one of its latest Ebola outbreaks. According to the United Nations, Congolese health authorities had confirmed more than 3,200 Ebola cases in Ituri, North Kivu, Haut-Uele and Tshopo provinces as of July 25, with more than 100 additional infections reported the following day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.N. said it is supporting Congolese authorities through contact tracing, laboratory testing, treatment of patients and disease surveillance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Food Programme has distributed food assistance to more than 23,000 Ebola patients, their contacts and other vulnerable people in Ituri, North Kivu and South Kivu provinces. UNICEF and its partners have visited more than 27,000 households to support contact monitoring and community surveillance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The World Health Organization has also expanded preparedness efforts to Congolese provinces that have not yet recorded Ebola cases, including launching infection prevention training for health workers at Bas-Uele Provincial Hospital in an effort to reduce the risk of further spread.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
