{"id":2577,"date":"2026-07-28T11:56:44","date_gmt":"2026-07-28T11:56:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/?p=2577"},"modified":"2026-07-28T11:56:44","modified_gmt":"2026-07-28T11:56:44","slug":"rwanda-clears-path-for-5g-era-with-2g-3g-network-transition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/28\/rwanda-clears-path-for-5g-era-with-2g-3g-network-transition\/politics\/national\/","title":{"rendered":"Rwanda Clears Path for 5G Era With 2G, 3G Network Transition"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"733\" height=\"418\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-2-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2579\" style=\"width:779px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-2-7.jpg 733w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-2-7-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 733px) 100vw, 733px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rwanda is moving closer to a new era of mobile connectivity as the government begins phasing out older 2G and 3G networks, a transition expected to strengthen high-speed internet access and create room for wider adoption of advanced technologies, including 5G.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Ministry of ICT and Innovation (MINICT) announced that 3G services will be switched off nationwide on <strong>June 30, 2027<\/strong>, while the retirement of the 2G network will follow after an assessment of the country\u2019s readiness, including network performance, service continuity and access to compatible devices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The transition is part of Rwanda\u2019s broader plan to modernize its telecommunications infrastructure and allow operators to invest more in expanding and improving 4G services while preparing for increased 5G deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MINICT said moving away from older networks will improve internet speeds, enhance voice call quality and reduce network interruptions, benefiting users of digital services such as Mobile Money, online government platforms, digital learning and healthcare services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government and the Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA), working with telecom operators and other stakeholders, will oversee the migration to ensure that essential services continue operating smoothly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Authorities said maintaining access to voice calls, SMS, Mobile Money and emergency communication services will remain a priority throughout the transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before the nationwide shutdown of 3G, Rwanda plans to conduct pilot tests in 2026 while continuing to expand 4G coverage and monitor the performance of newer networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mobile phone users have been advised to confirm whether their devices and SIM cards support 4G services.
