Rwanda’s Cabinet has approved the creation of a national conservation agency and endorsed a series of reforms aimed at accelerating the country’s transition to a knowledge-based, technology-driven economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decisions were made during a Cabinet meeting chaired by President Paul Kagame at Village Urugwiro on Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among the key resolutions was the establishment of the Rwanda Nature Foundation (RNF), a national institution that will oversee the protection, conservation and sustainable management of the country’s wildlife and protected ecosystems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cabinet also approved a package of digital transformation measures designed to modernize Rwanda’s economy. The reforms include the creation of the Rwanda Institute of Computing (RIC), a nationwide transition from 2G and 3G mobile networks to 4G and 5G technologies, and the rollout of eKash as the country’s integrated digital payments platform to expand financial inclusion and streamline electronic transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In agriculture, ministers adopted the National Food Innovation Strategy and approved the establishment of the Rwanda Food Innovation Partnership, an initiative intended to strengthen food systems through innovation, attract investment, create jobs and improve food security and nutrition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cabinet also approved a bill to ratify a second additional financing agreement between Rwanda and the International Development Association (IDA) to support a project aimed at improving businesses’ access to finance and strengthening their resilience. The loan agreement was signed in Kigali on June 25.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Other decisions included the approval of a ministerial order regulating permits related to fireworks and pyrotechnic materials, as well as several cooperation agreements covering mining, medicinal crops and hydropower development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mining agreement establishes a partnership between the Government of Rwanda and Kazakhstan’s JSC National Mining Company Tau-Ken Samruk to create a joint venture for mineral exploration and mining activities in Rwanda. Ministers also approved an agreement with InipasvalleyRw Ltd on the development of medicinal crops and revised an existing agreement between the Energy Utility Corporation Ltd. (EUCL) and Nyirahindwe HPP for the construction and operation of the Nyirahindwe I hydropower plant in Nyamasheke District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Cabinet further approved the accreditation of Thailand’s Ambassador to Rwanda, Jirusaya Birananda, who is based in Nairobi, the appointment of Marie Goreth Nizigama as the United Nations Women representative in Rwanda, and Anton Buttigieg as Rwanda’s honorary consul in Malta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cabinet members were also briefed on several upcoming events. Rwanda will celebrate National Harvest Day (Umuganura) on Aug. 7. The country is scheduled to host the 26th Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group (ESAAMLG) Council of Ministers meeting from Aug. 31 to Sept. 5, followed by the African Conference on Food Systems (AFSF) from Sept. 1 to 4, which will mark the forum’s 20th anniversary.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
