Rwanda\u2019s efforts to use technology and health data to improve healthcare planning and service delivery were highlighted on Tuesday as Bill Gates, founder of the Gates Foundation, visited the National Health Intelligence Center (NHIC).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Gates was received by Health Minister Dr Sabin Nsanzimana and ICT and Innovation Minister Paula Ingabire at NHIC, a national facility responsible for collecting, analysing and integrating health information from across the country\u2019s healthcare system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit focused on understanding how the centre uses real-time data to support decision-making and provide a clearer picture of Rwanda\u2019s health situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since becoming operational, NHIC has strengthened the way health authorities monitor trends, identify challenges and respond to emerging needs. Health officials say the centre has helped shift the health system from responding mainly after problems occur to using data for early detection, prevention and better planning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The centre\u2019s information systems have supported improvements in areas such as disease surveillance, emergency medical coordination, monitoring healthcare demand and guiding the distribution of resources, including medical supplies and health workers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through collaboration with partners, including the Gates Foundation, Rwanda is working to further expand NHIC\u2019s capacity to use health intelligence for early warning systems and stronger preparedness against public health threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The expanded use of health data is expected to help authorities identify potential disease outbreaks earlier, provide timely alerts and support faster responses before health challenges become more severe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The development of NHIC is part of Rwanda\u2019s wider investment in digital health solutions aimed at improving the quality, efficiency and accessibility of healthcare services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By connecting information from different levels of the health system, the centre supports evidence-based planning and helps decision-makers better understand where services and resources are most needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
