{"id":2415,"date":"2026-07-20T10:49:12","date_gmt":"2026-07-20T10:49:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/?p=2415"},"modified":"2026-07-20T10:49:12","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T10:49:12","slug":"world-cup-halftime-show-gets-mixed-reviews-despite-star-studded-lineup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/index.php\/2026\/07\/20\/world-cup-halftime-show-gets-mixed-reviews-despite-star-studded-lineup\/entertainment\/","title":{"rendered":"World Cup halftime show gets mixed reviews despite star-studded lineup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"596\" height=\"335\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-4-4.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2416\" style=\"width:815px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-4-4.jpg 596w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-4-4-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A star-studded halftime show featuring some of the world\u2019s biggest music acts received mixed reactions from critics after it brought together performers including Madonna, BTS, Justin Bieber, Shakira and The Muppets during the World Cup final.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"678\" height=\"452\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-2-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2417\" style=\"width:816px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-2-6.jpg 678w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-2-6-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 678px) 100vw, 678px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The show, held at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, was produced by FIFA and Global Citizen as part of a campaign to raise $100 million for the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, which supports efforts to reduce extreme poverty and expand access to sports for children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the performance attracted global attention because of its famous lineup, several critics questioned whether it delivered the kind of impact expected from a major World Cup event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Times gave the show two out of five stars, comparing it with the halftime spectacle of the Super Bowl, the championship game of American football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Americanisation of the World Cup is now complete,\u201d the newspaper wrote, criticising the decision to extend the traditional halftime break from 15 to 25 minutes to accommodate the entertainment programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York Times praised the production as \u201cimpeccably choreographed\u201d but said the show appeared disconnected from some football fans, describing it as a performance with \u201clots of stars and little purpose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"620\" height=\"494\" src=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-1-8.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2418\" style=\"width:803px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-1-8.jpg 620w, https:\/\/thedawnrwanda.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/images-1-8-300x239.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Telegraph gave a more positive review, awarding the show three stars and calling it \u201ccharming, friendly and intimate\u201d compared with the larger Super Bowl halftime productions. It praised the participation of the P2SS Chorus of Staten Island, a children\u2019s choir that performed at the end of the show, although it described Madonna\u2019s pre-recorded opening as underwhelming.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Guardian said the performance moved quickly between artists and packed many songs into a short period.
