Rwanda is showcasing its artificial intelligence-powered health intelligence system to experts from seven African countries as governments across the continent step up efforts to strengthen disease surveillance and modernize healthcare through digital technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thirty-five health intelligence specialists from Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Liberia, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Togo and Zambia are taking part in a two-week exchange program organized by Rwanda’s Ministry of Health through the National Health Intelligence Centre (NHIC) in partnership with the Health Intelligence Center for Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program gives participants an opportunity to study Rwanda’s integrated health intelligence platform, which combines data from community health workers, health centers and hospitals into a centralized system that enables real-time monitoring of public health trends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials say the platform supports early detection of disease outbreaks, improves health planning and resource allocation, and uses artificial intelligence to analyze health data and identify patients at risk of developing serious complications before they require emergency care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The information used to be scattered across systems that did not communicate with one another, making it difficult to use effectively,” NHIC Director General Dr. Eric Remera said. “Now that the data is centralized, we can analyze it in real time and support faster decision-making.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health Minister Dr. Sabin Nsanzimana said access to reliable health data is critical to effective healthcare delivery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“If you don’t know where diseases are emerging, who is sick or what they are suffering from, it is like working with your eyes closed,” he said, adding that the platform now provides health officials with a nationwide view of births, maternal health, disease trends and potential outbreaks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Masoud Mohamed, a health information specialist at Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health, said the exchange offers valuable lessons as Ethiopia works to integrate data from thousands of health facilities into a unified digital system despite infrastructure and data-quality challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exchange reflects growing efforts by African countries to strengthen public health systems through digital innovation and regional collaboration, particularly in improving disease surveillance and evidence-based decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
