Rwanda\u2019s HIV prevalence has fallen to 2.2% among people aged 15 to 49 in 2025, continuing a long-term decline, according to the latest national health survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey (RDHS), released on June 30 by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR) and the Ministry of Health, is based on HIV tests conducted on 13,000 men and women across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The findings show a steady reduction in prevalence over two decades. It stood at 3% between 2004\/2005 and 2014\/2015. It then declined to 2.7% in 2019\/2020 before reaching 2.2% in the 2025 survey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women remain more affected than men. HIV prevalence among women aged 15\u201349 is 2.8%, compared with 1.5% among men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The highest prevalence is among women aged 45\u201349, at 7.8%. Among men in the same age group, it is 3.5%. Men aged 50\u201359 record a prevalence of 4.3%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marital status shows sharp differences. HIV prevalence is highest among widowed individuals at 10.9%. It stands at 7.3% among divorced or separated people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Women in polygamous marriages have a prevalence of 6.5%, compared with 2.3% among women in monogamous unions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Urban residents are more affected than rural populations. Urban areas record a prevalence of 3.3%, nearly double the 1.7% in rural areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kigali City has the highest prevalence in the country at 3.7%. The Northern Province has the lowest at 1.0%. The Southern Province records 2.3%, the Western Province 2.2%, and the Eastern Province 2.0%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Education level is strongly associated with HIV prevalence. People with no formal education record 4.9%. It falls to 2.4% among those with primary education, 1.6% with secondary education, and 0.9% among those with education beyond secondary school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The poorest households record a prevalence of 3.3%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Male circumcision remains associated with lower HIV prevalence. It stands at 1.2% among circumcised men, compared with 2.5% among uncircumcised men or those improperly circumcised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The survey reports high data reliability, with 99% of eligible women and 97% of eligible men agreeing to HIV testing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rwanda is among African countries that have met the UNAIDS 95-95-95 targets for HIV response, which aim for 95% of people living with HIV to know their status, 95% of those diagnosed to be on treatment, and 95% of those on treatment to achieve viral suppression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite national progress, the survey says targeted interventions are still needed, particularly among older women, widowed and divorced individuals, and urban residents, especially in Kigali City, where prevalence remains above the national average.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
