Rwanda and Kenya have signed new agreements to improve the import and transport of petroleum products through the Northern Corridor, in a move officials say will ease fuel supply constraints and reduce costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The agreements allow Rwanda to use Kenya\u2019s port facilities, storage depots, and pipeline network to import petroleum products from global markets more efficiently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials said the deal will strengthen energy security and improve regional cooperation within the East African Community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two implementation agreements were signed. One is a trilateral arrangement between the Governments of Rwanda and Kenya and the Rwanda National Energy Company (RNEC). The other is between RNEC and the Kenya Pipeline Company (KPC) covering storage and transport of petroleum products.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rwanda currently relies on fuel imports through the ports of Dar es Salaam in Tanzania and Mombasa in Kenya. Officials said the new framework will improve efficiency and reduce pressure on existing supply routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under the agreement, Rwanda will increase petroleum volumes transported through the Northern Corridor from about 50,000 cubic meters per year to 500,000 cubic meters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is a tenfold increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Rwanda\u2019s Minister of Trade and Industry, Antoine Marie Kajangwe, said the agreement reflects more than two years of negotiations and provides a long-term framework for cooperation in fuel transport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said the deal will improve coordination between governments and private sector operators and support more stable fuel supply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kenya\u2019s State Minister for Energy and Petroleum, Opiyo Wandayi, said Kenya is committed to facilitating the transport of refined petroleum products to Rwanda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials from both countries said the agreement will also help reduce costs through shared infrastructure and improved regulatory alignment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most petroleum products used in East Africa are imported from outside the continent, mainly India and Saudi Arabia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
