Police FC and Kiyovu Sports will contest the FERWAFA Super Cup final after securing victories over Rayon Sports and Mukura VS respectively in Thursday’s semifinals at Kigali Pele Stadium.
Police FC eliminated Rayon Sports 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw in regulation time, while Kiyovu Sports advanced with a 1-0 win over Mukura VS, settled by a late penalty.
The tournament is being played under a new four-team format, replacing the previous edition in which only two teams competed.
Police and Rayon produced a closely fought encounter but neither side managed to find a breakthrough over 90 minutes.
Rayon created some of its best opportunities after the interval, with Iradukunda Elie Tatou providing a threat from the right and Kameni coming close with attempts inside the box.
Police’s defence held out to force a shootout.
Nshimirimana Ismael, Moussa Lemane, Kwitonda Alain and Mudahemuka Jean de Dieu converted Police’s four penalties. Rayon scored twice, while Nshuti Didier and Junior Kameni missed their attempts.
Kiyovu had earlier booked its place in the final after a tense encounter against Mukura.
Kiyovu dominated much of the opening half but failed to turn its chances into a goal. Mukura responded after the break and goalkeeper James Desire Djaoyang made several saves to keep Kiyovu from conceding.
Both teams were reduced to 10 men within two minutes. Mukura captain Joseph Sackey was sent off in the 55th minute, before Kiyovu’s Byiringiro David received a second yellow card two minutes later for handling the ball.
The game appeared headed for penalties before Kiyovu was awarded a spot kick in the second minute of added time after Mugisha Didier was brought down inside the area.
Mugisha stepped up to take the penalty and converted it past Mukura goalkeeper Tuyizere Jean Luc to send Kiyovu into the final.
Police FC and Kiyovu Sports will meet in the final on Sunday, Aug. 30, at Kigali Pele Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
