Cyclists return home from Cameroon with three medals

Rwandan cyclists returned home with three medals after a strong showing at the Grand Prix International VTT Chantal Biya in Cameroon, with Martha Ntakirutimana winning gold in the women’s senior category.

Ntakirutimana finished first in the women’s senior race, while fellow Rwandan rider Charlotte Iragena took second place to claim the silver medal.

Banzi Buhari completed Rwanda’s medal haul with a third-place finish in the men’s senior professional category, earning bronze.

The three cyclists arrived in Kigali late Monday, Aug. 11, alongside their coach, Byukusenge Nathan, after competing in the mountain bike race in Cameroon.

The competition featured an 11.3-kilometer course in the Bagofit area and brought together 90 cyclists from 15 countries.

Riders competed across several categories, including amateur and professional divisions for men and women, as well as junior events.

The race was held for the third time since it was named after Chantal Biya, the first lady of Cameroon.

Rwanda’s results in the competition gave its three-member team a medal in each of the categories in which its riders competed.
